Community Archiving Workshop (CAW)

Join us on October 19 for a one-day workshop on community building and the preservation of audiovisual collections. Organized by the Centre for Audiovisual Culture “Meno Avilys” and the Community Archiving Workshop (CAW, USA), in partnership with Vilniaus Kolegija / Higher Education Institution (VIKO, LT), the workshop brings together archivists and community volunteers to work side by side to preserve a local audiovisual collection.

CAW returns to the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) conference for the third time, this year partnering with “Meno Avilys”, an organization that preserves audiovisual heritage and keeps it relevant for new audiences.

The workshop begins with educational presentations on identifying audiovisual formats and assessing their risk factors. Participants then break into groups and work together to inspect and inventory the audiovisual collection of Saulius Macaitis, one of Lithuania’s most prominent film scholars and critics and the author of books on Lithuanian and world cinema.

Added to the holdings of the “Meno Avilys” Cinematheque in 2009, the collection is now part of its audiovisual heritage archive and comprises several thousand VHS tapes, periodicals and books, as well as Macaitis’s personal archive of photographs.

The workshop has three goals: to train participants in the handling and care of audiovisual collections, to engage local community members in processing and describing their community’s audiovisual assets, and to prepare a small collection of recordings for preservation.

The event will be held in English.

The event is free of charge.

Registration is required. Registration is open until October 15. Only participants who have received confirmation are welcome at the event.
