Young programmers

Young Programmers/Young Curators is an educational initiative. Curated by Meno Avilys, it aims to provide young people with the opportunity to try on the profession of a film programmer: watch films, discuss them, create film programs and publicize them by themselves. At the same time, it offers a brilliant opportunity to meet like-minded folks, develop a thoughtful scrutiny of the screen and the world by communicating with professionals, express one’s thoughts and feelings and share them with others.

In 2023, the Vilnius Documentary Film Festival opened its doors to Young Programmers from Meno Avilys for the fourth year straight. The team of young people invited the audience to special paired film screenings, the so-called “double bills.” Each was a combination of a feature-length and a short documentary and included films from two festivals, the Vilnius Documentary Film Festival and the Vilnius Short Film Festival.

The Vilnius Short Film Festival, the co-organizer of the screenings, is participating in the European Film Festival Network “Young4Film”. This international project aims to educate the festival audience and popularize European cinema among children and young people of all ages. Meno Avilys is also participating in the project as an expert. “Young4Film”, like the young programmers, has been inspired by the international project “Moving Cinema”.
